Kinlochleven lies seven miles east of Glencoe at the head of Loch Leven a beautiful fjord-like sea loch. Kinlochleven is a major overnight stop on the West Highland Way, the village is surrounded by mountains and is fantastic for a range of outdoor activities and is a great place to meet cyclists, hill walkers and climbers.
The new climbing centre "The Ice Factor" includes the world's biggest indoor ice climbing facility and the UK's largest articulated rock climbing wall and is also a base for a wide range of other activities. It has an outdoor equipment shop and cafe.
There is a visitor centre telling the "Aluminium Story" of the village's recent history as the location of a hydro-powered smelter. There are a couple of shops, fish & chip shop, pub, hotels and B&Bs and at one of the hotels, a small campsite with affordable log cabins.
If you are heading north by bike to Fort William and the Great Glen, There is the option to take a short-cut and avoid the busy A82 by cycling along the route of the West Highland Way from Kinlochleven to Fort William. This section travels along one of the historic "Wade's Military Roads" and is therefore wide enough for mountain bikers and walkers to share. The road is quite steep and rocky in places so is only suitable for hybrid / mountain bikes.
