Publicity for the whole route and display of signs and leaflets have recently been suspended in favour of promoting individual cycling & mountain biking centres along the Great Glen.
Here's an extract from a recent official statement by the Forestry Commission
The trails will provide a higher quality alternative for mountain bikes than the former Great Glen Cycle Route. The Cycle Route will be withdrawn this year (2006) and it should be stressed that the new Trails WILL NOT BE A LIKE FOR LIKE REPLACEMENT. Although it will be possible for mountain bike riders to pedal between each facility, the Trails will not be promoted as a connected route.Development work is underway (to be completed for the 2007 season) which will improve and extend trails at the following centres:-
Please note that all previous routes are open and it is still possible to ride along the entire length of the Great Glen using trails and backroads avoiding the busy A82.
The www.greatglenbikes.com website gives details and maps of these routes in the "interconnecting routes" section.
The routes are made up as follows:-
Fort William to Invergarry (42km, 26miles)
Invergarry to Fort Augustus (13km, 8miles)
Fort Augustus to Invermoriston (12km, 7.5miles)
Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit (19.5km 12miles)
Drumnadrochit to Inverness (47km, 29miles)
TOTAL (134km, 83miles)
