The Great Glen

Invergarry to Fort Augustus

Section 4 - Invergarry to Oich Bridge

(6.5km, 4 miles)
This challenging section is off-road all the way and graded "red" (for mountain / XC / hybrid bikes). Starting a few metres West of Invergarry Hotel, climb the steep twisting single track section up to a forest track, then continue along until you come to the A82 near Oich Bridge, cycle or walk a short distance downhill over the stone bridge and turn left onto the tow-path just before the canal swing-bridge. Here you can pause to admire the historic, recently restored suspension bridge.

Caledonian Canal near Kytra Lock

Section 5 - Oich Bridge to Fort Augustus
(6.5km, 4 miles)

This is an easy, flat section graded "green" along the canal tow-path. Take care and be prepared to dismount to avoid pinch-punctures at each of the short cobbled sections close to the locks. The scenery is beautiful as you cycle along between the canal and the river Oich past Aucteraw forest under the crags of Torr Dhuin Fort. Soon you will reach Fort Augustus with it's impressive flight of locks running through the centre of the village. Here you will find the canal heritage museum, shops and food stops, and public toilets next to the car-park. If you plan to stop in here, see our Fort Augustus page for more information.
