The Great Glen

Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit

Section 8 - Invermoriston to Loch Ness Youth Hostel
(6.4km, 4miles)

This section is graded "red" on steep forest tracks through wild country. Starting from just West of the hotel, follow the steep narrow minor road as it zig-zags uphill for a kilometer then look out for a turning on the right onto a forest road. Continue uphill on the track which soon levels out high above Loch Ness, and then loops left into a small valley to cross a burn, and turns back towards Loch Ness, watch out here for a narrow section of track that goes down steeply to join another forest road which you follow for about 3km (1.8 miles). Where the track descends into a clearing at grid ref NH192 456, you have a choice to turn right for Loch Ness Youth Hostel or go straight on to section 9.

Section 9 - Loch Ness Youth Hostel to Bark Sheds
(8km, 5miles)

This section is graded "red" on steep tracks through forest and wild country up to 275m (900ft) above Loch Ness - the ride and the views are breathtaking! Our picture shows the view looking back to Fort Augustus 12 miles distant at the end of Loch Ness. Even in this shot, you can see less than half the length of the loch! From the clearing at grid ref NH192 456, go straigt on up the forest road twisting up through the treeline onto the top where a narrow section of trail is cut into the steep hillside. From here the forest road continues for about 3km before descending quite steeply, watch out for a left turn that you must take which leads onto a old track.

Section 10 - Bark Sheds to Drumnadrochit
(4.8km, 3miles)

This section is graded "blue" - the old track twists and turns past buildings and through several gates to bring you, after a kilometer onto a quiet tarmac road that leads downhill into the village. Go through the first gate and bear left, then through the second gate and continue across a small stream to a third gate where you must turn left onto a gravel track. Follow this track through two more gates onto the tarmac road. Continue along the road for 6km to Lewiston where you meet the A82 again. Turn Left over Borlum bridge, then first right for the Youth Hostel or straight on along the main road for the village centre. Alternatively, at Borlum bridge you can turn right and take a 2km diversion along the cycle path by the side of the main road, up the hill to Urquhart Castle. If you plan to stop in here, see our Drumnadrochit page.
